2009 - 2010 Projects
"PENNY A DAY" FOR AUTISM WGM'S SPECIAL PROJECT This project is very near and dear to me. My nephew, Zan, was diagnosed with Autism at the age of three. When the case worker gave us the diagnosis and said it would be better to institutionalize him, our family knew that this could not happen. My sister, Lula, and her husband, Gary, are constantly educating themselves about Autism and are devoted to their son's care. Zan has grown to be a loving 18 year old who likes to be around his family and familiar faces. He is full of mischief and loves to laugh. If every Eastern Star would donate a "penny a day", maybe the cause and a cure for Autism would be closer to reality. A colorful container is placed on your Secretary's desk for your loving contributions. Just a few statistics: **Every day in North Carolina, two children will be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. That's 60 children per month and over 700 per year. Autism Spectrum is the second most common developmental disability. **Up to 1 of every 150 children born today will be diagnosed with Autism. **There are over 50,000 North Carolina families affected by Autism and the number grows each day. **There are at least 3,618 children in North Carolina ages 5 and younger who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. **In the public school system, the children population with Autism is increasing by 15.7% per year while the total student population is growing 1.5%. **The total number of students with Autism in NC public schools has nearly tripled since 1999. State Chairman: Donna Chesser, WGM

The cost of the shirt is only $20. The Disaster and Benevolent Fund is administered by a committee of five. All application information is kept confidential. The growth of this fund will enable us to help our Sisters and Brothers in time of need. Thank you for your support. (Download Blank Order Form PDF File , JPG File)

"FOOD LION GIFT CARDS" GRAND CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP We are continuing this great project this year. Cards will be available for purchase through the Grand Chapter Office. The Chapter Secretaries will order them from the Grand Secretary. Cards can be ordered in denominations of $25 and $100. Chapters might wish to order several Cards in advance with Chapter funds, so that a member will not have their money tied up while awaiting the ordering and returning of the Cards from the Grand Secretary.
Food Lion will refund 5% of total purchases to the Grand Chapter. These monies go to the Grand Chapter Scholarship Fund. David Lewis - State Chairman
(Does anyone know if Forms A & B are both still used? Please e-mail Jim Tyson.) Gift Card FORM 'A' Gift Card FORM 'B'
"FOOD LION MVP CARDS" GRAND CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP Food Lion has a budgeted amount that they can contribute to worthy groups that participate in their programs when group members register their "swipe card" as a member of their group. The contribution by Food Lion is not based on total purchases, but the number of "hits" from the group as they swipe their cards at check-out. In 2008, our group was one of the largest "swipers" in the state. Once registered, you do not have to renew your registration, unless you replace it with a new card.
